A helluva dancer is heading to Broadway! So You Think You Can Dance season 11 victor Ricky Ubeda will join the ensemble of On the Town later this month. He will leap across the Lyric Theatre stage from February 27 through April 26. The opportunity to appear in the production was announced as one of the prizes for the winner last summer.
Ubeda auditioned for the FOX competition’s eleventh season while a high school student in Miami, Florida. After taking the top spot and being crowned “America’s Favorite Dancer,” he went on tour with his fellow competitors and appeared on numerous talk shows. He also choreographs and teaches across the country.
First seen on Broadway in 1944, On the Town features music by Leonard Bernstein and a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. It follows the adventures of three sailors on leave in New York City. Based on the ballet Fancy Free by Jerome Robbins, the musical's toe-tapping numbers include “New York, New York,” “I Can Cook Too,” “Lonely Town” and “Some Other Time.”
The revival stars Tony Yazbeck, Jay Armstrong Johnson and Clyde Alves as Gabey, Chip and Ozzie, respectively, as well as Megan Fairchild, Jackie Hoffman, Michael Rupert, Elizabeth Stanley and Alysha Umphress. Ubeda will join an ensemble that includes fellow SYTYCD alum Jess LeProtto, who competed in the show’s eighth season.
